The Colca Valley, located in the Arequipa region, has officially been recognized with Level 4 status, the highest distinction a tourist resource can receive in Peru. This prestigious recognition places it on the same level as Machu Picchu and the Amazon River, highlighting its cultural, natural, and tourism significance both nationally and internationally.
The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) awarded this distinction following the criteria of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). To reach Level 4, a destination must possess unique characteristics of the country and be able to attract a large number of national and international visitors, while also enhancing nearby attractions to create a comprehensive tourism impact.
Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Claudia Cornejo, announced this recognition during a meeting with regional authorities in Arequipa, emphasizing the Colca Valley’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The official ceremony for this distinction is expected to take place in April, solidifying the destination on Peru’s tourism map.
According to Arequipa’s Regional Manager of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Carlos Andrade, this distinction arrives at a crucial moment, helping to revive tourism in the Caylloma province. The Colca Valley will become a key driver of local development, generating economic opportunities for communities while promoting Andean culture.
With Level 4 status, Mincetur can define strategies and prioritize actions to enhance the Colca Valley and its surroundings, strengthening tourism infrastructure, promoting sustainable tourism, and preserving the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
The Colca Valley offers visitors spectacular landscapes, the majesty of the Andes, and the chance to observe the in its natural habitat. With its cultural richness, living traditions, and natural beauty, this destination stands as one of Peru’s iconic tourist attractions, perfect for those seeking unique and unforgettable experiences.
