The Colca Valley, located in the Arequipa region, has officially been recognized with Level 4 status, the highest distinction a tourist resource can receive in Peru. This prestigious recognition places it on the same level as Machu Picchu and the Amazon River, highlighting its cultural, natural, and tourism significance both nationally and internationally.

A World-Class Recognition

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) awarded this distinction following the criteria of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). To reach Level 4, a destination must possess unique characteristics of the country and be able to attract a large number of national and international visitors, while also enhancing nearby attractions to create a comprehensive tourism impact.

Official Statements

Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Claudia Cornejo, announced this recognition during a meeting with regional authorities in Arequipa, emphasizing the Colca Valley’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The official ceremony for this distinction is expected to take place in April, solidifying the destination on Peru’s tourism map.

According to Arequipa’s Regional Manager of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Carlos Andrade, this distinction arrives at a crucial moment, helping to revive tourism in the Caylloma province. The Colca Valley will become a key driver of local development, generating economic opportunities for communities while promoting Andean culture.
