Day 1 Airport Reception – City Tour in Cusco

Upon arrival in Cusco, our staff will contact you at the airport to transfer you to the hotel where you can acclimatize and rest.

At the agreed time we will begin the City Tour, in the Plaza de Armas of Cusco , from where we will start our tour. Later we will visit the Qoricancha temple , which was built on the base of the Inca foundation where the god “Sun” was worshipped, it is worth mentioning that the Inca walls are still preserved. Then we will visit the Sacsayhuamán fortress , famous for its enormous polished and molded stones, some up to 9 meters high and weighing 350 tons.

Then we will go to the Temple of Qenqo , which is a mystical temple of the Incas, where religious sacrifices were made. Continuing with our tour, we will visit the Puka Pukara Military Center, which was the military control center of the Incas. Finally, we will visit the Tambomachay Temple , known as “The Bath of the Ñusta” due to the existence of two aqueducts that carry crystal-clear water throughout the year.

Day 2 Tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas

Pick up from the hotel at 6:20 am. We will leave Cusco heading to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will begin the tour by visiting Chinchero , then we will head towards Andenes and Moray and the town of Maras. We will visit the Salt Mines called Salineras.

We will then head to Urubamba where we can enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After lunch we will continue the trip towards the Vilcanota River to visit the Ollantaytambo Fortress. It was built to keep out invaders from the jungle.

At the end we went to the Ollantaytambo station to take the train to Machu Picchu. After an hour and 40 minute train ride and enjoying the beautiful landscapes surrounding the entrance to the town of Aguas Calientes we arrived at the Machu Picchu station, where the transfer does not wait to take us to the hotel.

At the hotel the guide will not give the necessary instructions for the visit to Machu Picchu (night at the Aguas Calientes hotel).

Day 3 Tour to Machu Picchu

Very early after breakfast at the hotel, we will approach the bus station that will take us there, to ascend a zigzag path for 40 minutes until we reach the wonder of the world “ The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu ”, known as “The Lost City of the Incas”.

Once in the citadel of Machu Picchu we will begin our guided tour for approximately two hours, then we will be given free time and we will return to the town to take a walk around the citadel and have lunch in one of the restaurants in the town of Aguas Calientes.

Then we will go to the Machu Picchu train station. Remember that we must arrive 30 minutes before the train leaves, which will take us to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, our transfer will be waiting for us to take us to the city of Cusco (Plaza Regocijo).

Day 4 Rainbow Mountain Tour

Pick up from your hotel will be between 04:30 am and 05:00 am. Afterwards we will begin our journey to the south of Cusco. After 1 hour and a half of travel we will arrive at our first stop in the district of Cusipata where we will have breakfast. Then we will continue our journey for another hour on an unpaved road.

Upon reaching the foothills of the Vinicunca mountain range, we will begin the 1 hour and a half walk, appreciating beautiful landscapes full of streams, mountains, lagoons, snow-capped mountains, flora and fauna. Once at our desired destination at 5020 meters above sea level, we will have about 30 to 40 minutes to enjoy and take pictures at the Rainbow Mountain.

At the end of the visit we will return to our bus to board and return to Cusipata where a delicious menu awaits us to comfort us. Finally we will return to the city of Cusco arriving at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Arriving in Cusco

To start our 8-day vacation in Cusco and Machu Picchu, we need to get to Cusco. In Cusco there is the Alejandro Velasco Airport for local or national flights. In order to get to Cusco, all travelers must disembark in Lima and go through immigration, even if their flight to Cusco is on the same day and the same airline.

Which option to take by air or by land

The best option to travel to Cusco is by air. There are currently several airlines that provide air transport service Lima-Cusco, among which we can mention LATAM, VIVA AIR, SKY AIRLINE, STAR PERU. Of all of them, LATAM is the most recommended, due to the variety of schedules it handles.

The option of traveling by land is also a good option, but you always have to look for the best options that offer adequate comfort for the trip. The bus trip takes 22 hours, but if your trip is from Puno or Arequipa, you can take this option since the trip is usually cheaper and it is only approximately 12 hours of travel.

Luggage storage

To travel on domestic flights, you must take into account the type of service contracted, since there are rates that only allow you to bring a maximum of 8 kilos of luggage. If you are traveling with more, make sure to book in advance to avoid setbacks when boarding.

In Cusco, if you have luggage, you can leave it safely at the accommodation or we can also provide you with a storage place at the Andino Tours Peru offices, but taking into account the opening and closing hours of the office.

If you arrive at the hotel before check-in time, you can leave it free of charge in the hotel’s storage room so you can go out and do your activities or rest in the hotel lobby.

Altitude in Cusco

Cusco is located at about 3300 meters above sea level, which is why people who travel at lower altitudes suffer from altitude sickness “Soroche”, this is caused because at higher altitudes there is less oxygen than at sea level, so the body works harder to get the oxygen it needs, which is why for long walks it is recommended to spend at least two days in Cusco.

The symptoms of altitude sickness are headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, sleeping problems, loss of appetite, breathing problems. It is important to mention that most of the time the symptoms will be mild, but if they get worse, consult a doctor or contact our offices. Mate de Coca is a recommended infusion for this illness, so it is always offered within the accommodation to counteract altitude sickness.

Climate in Cusco

One of the big questions is what the weather is like in Cusco. It is easy to find this information on the internet, but you also have to take into account that each season and during these times the climates are changing. The dry season in Cusco is from April to October, but there will always be a sudden rain with lightning and thunder.

It is always advisable to have the proper rain gear, such as rain ponchos or rain jackets, waterproof gloves, and suitable shoes that do not slip in the rain.

First aid
