On March 30, 2021, Machu Picchu will host an unprecedented event: a hike exclusively organized for a team of female leaders and porters, designed to inspire and empower participants as they traverse the majestic Andes to the iconic Inca citadel. This historic event marks a significant step toward gender equality and the promotion of fair opportunities for women in Peru’s tourism industry.
The female team of porters and tour guides will have the important task of accompanying and assisting a group of women as they walk historic trails that have been traveled for centuries. This initiative not only breaks stereotypes associated with the work of porters—traditionally male-dominated—but also provides the opportunity for fair and dignified income for the women involved. This project demonstrates a real commitment to equality and the recognition of women’s work in Peru’s tourism sector.
During the hike, between 8 and 10 porters and two tour guides will carry a 15 kg load including all necessary cooking and camping equipment. This ensures that participants can focus on enjoying the experience and connecting with Inca culture without logistical worries. Although the hike was originally planned on the classic four-day Inca Trail, recent government restrictions required the route to be adapted, starting from KM102 and continuing along the impressive Salkantay Trekking, a challenging five-day trek that combines mountainous landscapes, tropical jungle, and lesser-explored archaeological sites.
This trek is not only a physical challenge but also an educational and cultural experience. Participants will learn about Andean history, Inca architecture, and local traditions while immersing themselves in an unparalleled natural environment. The hike fosters connections among women from different regions and professions, strengthening a supportive female network and promoting leadership in areas traditionally underrepresented by women.
Upon completing this historic hike, women will not only achieve a personal milestone but also help highlight the work of porters and tour guides in Peru. This event serves as an inspiring example of how tourism can be a tool for empowerment and social change, promoting equality, sustainability, and the appreciation of cultural heritage.
