Choquequirao Trek Information

The Choquequirao trek is one of the most challenging hikes in Cusco, so we’ve put together all the essential information you need right here.

Take note of the details below, including the highest and lowest points along the trail, Choquequirao’s location, the best months of the year to visit, the difficulty level, the physical condition required, and availability.

Location of Choquequirao

Choquequirao is located in the district of Santa Teresa, in the province of La Convención, west of the city of Cusco. It lies in the middle of dense vegetation, on the right bank of the Apurímac River. The site is about 32 km from Cachora, the town where the trek begins.

How to Get to Choquequirao

To start the trek to Choquequirao, we usually provide private transportation from Cusco to Cachora, the starting point of the hike.

If you want to do the trek on your own, you can:

  • Take a bus on the Cusco–Abancay route, which departs in the mornings from Cusco’s main bus terminals.
  • Find shared cars leaving from Arcopata that follow the same route.

We recommend booking this trek with a reliable tour agency that organizes the trip to avoid inconveniences—ideally with us: CHOQUEQUIRAO TRAVEL!

Weather on the Choquequirao Trek

The Choquequirao trek takes place at a lower altitude than Cusco, which means you’ll experience warm weather for most of the hike, although nights (especially the second night) can get chilly.

As in other Andean regions, there are two well-defined seasons:

  • Rainy season: November to March
  • Dry season: April to November

Maximum and Minimum Elevations

The trek reaches a maximum altitude of 3,035 m (9,957 ft) at the main square of Choquequirao and a minimum altitude of about 1,500 m (4,921 ft) at La Playa Rosalina.

One advantage of this trek is the warm climate, which means altitude sickness is generally not an issue.

Physical Condition Required

This trek requires good physical and mental fitness, as it demands more effort than the Inca Trail or the Salkantay trek.

Fortunately, you’ll be accompanied by our expert guides and horsemen, who will ensure your journey is both safe and unforgettable.

Age Requirements

Travelers of all ages can do this trek as long as they are in good shape and comfortable with hiking. Children under ten who participate in the trek will remain under the responsibility of their parents.

Difficulty Level of the Choquequirao Trek

We have established a difficulty scale for our treks:

  • Easy: Little physical effort, suitable for children with parents.
  • Moderate: For people who practice sports or are used to walking on different terrains.
  • Challenging: Requires prior experience with hikes of more than 5–6 hours.
  • Demanding: Requires strong stamina, physical strength, and hiking experience.
  • Strenuous: For those fully prepared physically and mentally, involving great effort and self-sufficiency (carrying your own gear).

The Choquequirao trek typically ranges from challenging to strenuous depending on the itinerary.
